The collaborative efforts between the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, and the World Bank were underscored on Tuesday as both entities expressed a shared commitment to unlocking crucial financing and providing essential technical support for the advancement of the nation’s mining sector. The occasion was marked by a courtesy visit to Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, during which World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri, lauded the renewed emphasis on mineral resource development under the Tinubu administration.

Chaudhuri conveyed his satisfaction with the increased attention given to the mining sector, noting that Nigeria boasts a wealth of economically-viable minerals. He emphasized that this sector possesses the potential to make a substantial contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Beyond financial support, Chaudhuri reiterated the World Bank’s commitment to collaborating with the ministry in providing technical assistance aimed at enhancing and optimizing mining operations in the country.

During the visit, Chaudhuri highlighted the bank’s dedication to partnering with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in identifying specific intervention areas that require funding. He emphasized the importance of effective project implementation and underscored that transparency in the utilization of funds is a non-negotiable aspect of their collaboration.

Moreover, Chaudhuri pointed out that the World Bank’s involvement extends beyond financial contributions, as the institution is equally dedicated to offering technical support. This multifaceted approach aims to not only inject capital into critical aspects of the mining sector but also to improve and streamline the operational aspects through knowledge transfer and expertise.

In response to the visit, Minister Dele Alake, as conveyed by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, expressed appreciation for the World Bank’s ongoing support in various developmental projects across diverse sectors of the Nigerian economy. He specifically acknowledged the bank’s assistance in palliatives following the removal of fuel subsidies, highlighting the tangible impact of their collaboration.

Minister Alake also recognized the World Bank’s involvement in the mining diver project, expressing gratitude and anticipation for further strengthening of this collaboration. He emphasized the importance of securing the necessary funding for critical areas within the mining sector, aligning with the bank’s commitment to technical support as previously indicated.

Looking forward, Minister Alake shed light on his vision for the mining sector, emphasizing ongoing efforts to establish efficient governance structures and enhance environmental security within the industry. He reassured that the federal government remains resolute in providing an enabling environment for mining operations, with a keen focus on maximizing benefits for host communities.
