During the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogue in Ghana, President Nana Akufo-Addo revealed plans to implement a visa-free policy for travellers from all African countries to Ghana starting this year.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of adopting such policies continent-wide, emphasizing the need for unrestricted movement of people, goods, and services. The goal is to capitalize on increased trade, fostering African economic transformation.
He said, “Many of you had to acquire a visa to come to this event; we made a special arrangement for this conference, reducing the visa acquisition fee by 50%, allowing for visa on arrival. The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free access for all Africans travelling into our country, and the process has begun to get the policy implemented this year.”
Key Points:
- Promoting Economic Growth: The move aligns with Ghana’s commitment to promoting economic growth by facilitating easier access for African migrants. The president emphasized the role of visa-free entry in boosting trade and economic development.
- A Continental Trend: Ghana joins the ranks of countries promoting the free trade flow and economic growth as stipulated by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Gambia, and Benin Republic have all taken steps to waive visa requirements for African migrants in recent years.
- African Prosperity Dialogue: The announcement was made during the Africa Prosperity Dialogue, an annual platform organized by the AfCFTA Secretariat and the African Prosperity Network. This event allows Africa’s leadership to engage, forge partnerships, and commit to achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Ghana’s decision to implement a visa-free policy reflects a broader commitment to regional integration, fostering collaboration, and promoting the principles of free movement as outlined in continental agreements.
