The Federal University, Oye-Ekiti has awarded Olabisi Onasanya, the chairman and founder of The Address Homes, an honorary doctorate in finance.

According to a release from The Address Homes, the university senate and governing council authorized the conferment in honor of Onasanya’s professional success, which helped him advance to the top of the banking industry.

It added that Onasanya, a former group managing director and CEO of First Bank Plc, received a decoration from Vice Chancellor Professor Abayomi Fasina at the 7th convocation of FUOYE.

In his acceptance speech, Onasanya thanked the university’s vice-chancellor, governing council, senate, staff, and students for recognizing his merit for the prestigious honor.

Onasanya pledged not to give up and gave N1 million to Abibat Adejoke, the finest accounting graduate from FUOYE who received a first-class grade.

He said, “I thank God that after seven years of my retirement as the group managing director of First Bank, I am still active and relevant to my society. We should be able to give back to society and perform our duty wherever we find ourselves so as to encourage the young ones.

“Take everything you have learnt in the course of your time here as a tool to help with solving people’s problems.

“Education is not an end in itself. It is a means to an end.

“The end is to create solutions for the society and people you meet throughout your life.”

Onasanya holds fellowships from the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Institute of Taxation.

Additionally, he has held positions on the Presidential Committee on Reducing Interest Rates and the Sub-Committee on Fiscal and Monetary Policies of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.
