Former EU Commission president Jacques Delors dies: daughter

by Tolulope Akinruli

Jacques Delors, a distinguished figure in the creation of the euro currency and former head of the European Commission, breathed his last at the age of 98 in his residence in Paris, as conveyed by his daughter Martine Aubry in an announcement to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Wednesday. Delors, a stalwart socialist, carved a significant political trajectory in France, notably serving as the finance minister during President Francois Mitterrand’s tenure from 1981 to 1984.

Despite enjoying a substantial lead in polls, Delors opted not to pursue the presidency in 1995. This decision, he later explained, was fueled by an intense desire for independence that he considered insurmountable. His legacy, however, was firmly established during his tenure as the head of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995, a pivotal decade marked by notable strides in the integration of the European Union.

Delors played a pivotal role in landmark achievements such as the establishment of the common market, the implementation of the Schengen accords facilitating borderless travel, the initiation of the Erasmus program promoting student exchanges, and the introduction of the euro as the single currency for the member states.

His ambitious push for heightened integration encountered resistance, particularly from the United Kingdom under the leadership of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The Sun newspaper, in a memorable front-page headline in 1990, succinctly captured the sentiments of those skeptical about a single currency and expanded powers for the European Parliament with the phrase “Up Yours Delors.”

Undeterred by such opposition, Delors went on to establish think tanks dedicated to advancing the cause of European federalism. In the later years of his illustrious career, he sounded the alarm on the rising dangers of populism in Europe. Concurrently, he called for a bold and audacious approach in dealing with the repercussions of Brexit, emphasizing the need for thoughtful and decisive actions to navigate the challenges posed by the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
