Ambrose Owuru, the defunct Hope Democratic Party (HDP)’s 2019 presidential candidate, has petitioned the Supreme Court to remove President Bola Tinubu from office.

On November 25, 2024, Owuru filed a motion contesting the legality of President Tinubu’s government. He argues that he is the legitimate victor of the 2019 presidential election and that the poll in which he took part was illegally cancelled.

He contends that as a result, later elections—such as the 2023 presidential election that installed Tinubu—are void.

The Supreme Court will hear Owuru’s motion on Monday, December 16, 2024. This development has attracted considerable interest because of the peculiarity of Owuru’s legal defences and the possible political ramifications for Nigeria.

Political analysts and legal professionals are keeping a careful eye on the proceedings, pointing out that Owuru’s case poses a special challenge to the current government. The verdict in this case might establish a standard for handling electoral disputes in Nigeria.

It should be noted that Owuru has a history of pursuing unusual legal challenges related to presidential elections, and this newest move is no exception.

The legitimacy of the incumbent presidency and the stability of Nigeria’s democratic and election processes will be greatly influenced by the Supreme Court’s ruling in this case.
