The latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) unveils concerning trends in food prices, particularly items like beef, rice, beans, onions, and tomatoes. Released in Abuja, the NBS Selected Food Prices Watch report for January 2024 paints a stark picture of rising costs for essential commodities, impacting consumers across the nation.

The average food price of boneless beef per kilogram skyrocketed by a staggering 37.08% compared to January 2023, reaching a substantial N3,315.78. This sharp increase signifies a notable strain on household budgets, as beef is a dietary staple for many families. Moreover, on a month-on-month basis, the cost surged by 5.37% from December 2023, further exacerbating the financial burden on consumers.

Similarly, the price of local rice witnessed a significant uptick, jumping by 98.47% year-on-year to hit N1,021.79 per kilogram. This surge underscores the challenges within the agricultural sector, affecting both production and distribution channels. Furthermore, the month-on-month increase of 11.31% indicates a rapid escalation in prices within a short span, reflecting broader economic pressures.

Legumes, brown beans experienced a notable price hike, soaring by 64.42% from January 2023 to January 2024, reaching N976.58 per kilogram. This surge in bean prices further compounds the affordability crisis faced by consumers, particularly those reliant on legumes as a primary protein source.

Onion bulb prices also witnessed a sharp incline, rising by 97.38% year-on-year to N881.20 per kilogram. However, there was a slight reprieve on a month-on-month basis, with prices decreasing by 9.33% from December 2023. Despite this marginal reduction, the overall trajectory points towards escalating food costs, adding strain to household budgets.

Nontheless, tomato prices surged by 80.98% compared to January 2023, reaching N845.26 per kilogram. This surge in tomato prices further compounds the challenges faced by consumers, particularly those striving to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet amidst rising costs.
