Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of State for Health, has proposed a complete halt to medical syringe imports into Nigeria, aiming to invigorate the nation’s economy and stimulate local production.

This initiative gained traction during a recent visit by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to the Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Limited Syringe factory in Ogun State.

The visit aimed to address the prevalent issue of substandard medical device imports and promote indigenous manufacturing.

The Ban on Syringe Imports

Highlighting the government’s steadfast commitment to bolstering local industries, Dr. Alausa stressed the importance of revitalizing syringe production within Nigeria to ensure the availability of high-quality products and stimulate job creation.

Adeyeye affirmed the Agency’s determination to cease issuing import authorizations for syringes, redirecting focus towards local manufacturers while collaborating with them to enhance production standards.

While acknowledging potential initial cost implications associated with locally manufactured syringes, Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that increasing production volumes would inevitably lead to price reductions over time.

This measure ensures quality control and enhances the nation’s capacity for self-sufficiency in critical healthcare supplies, aligning with broader efforts to promote Nigeria’s economic interests.

Key Takeaways

The decision to ban syringe imports in Nigeria follows a warning issued by the NAFDAC DG to customs agents regarding the influx of imported syringes despite high import duties aimed at safeguarding the local market.
