The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a ₦777 billion budget to complete the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway, a critical 700-kilometer corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory to the northern regions.
Project Overview
The highway reconstruction is segmented into three sections:
-
Sections 1 & 3: Spanning 118 kilometers, awarded to Infouest with a contract sum of ₦252 billion.
-
Section 2: Covering 164 kilometers (82 km dual carriageway), allocated ₦525 billion.
The project, initially contracted to Julius Berger in 2018 for ₦155.7 billion, faced delays due to funding issues and cost escalations. The current administration has restructured the contract, emphasizing reinforced concrete pavement to ensure durability of 50–100 years.
Infrastructure Enhancements
The reconstruction includes:
-
Installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras from Abuja to Kano.
-
Extension of the road to Aminu Kano International Airport.
-
Implementation of eco-friendly construction methods, such as cold recycling with foamed bitumen.
These enhancements aim to improve safety, security, and sustainability along the highway.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has assured that the project will be completed within 14 months. The reconstruction is expected to boost economic activities, enhance security, and provide a durable transportation link between the capital and northern Nigeria
