Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has revealed that Nigeria’s ambitious plan to lay fibre optic cables nationwide requires a substantial $2 billion investment. Tijani shared this insight during an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday, underscoring the significance of fibre optics in enhancing the quality of communication services in the country.
Collaborating with the Nigeria Communication Commission, Tijani emphasized the importance of fibre optics to elevate communication standards. While the federal government has already completed the construction of approximately 35,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables nationwide, a substantial additional 95,000 kilometres is deemed necessary for comprehensive coverage.
The Minister expressed his commitment: “If we prioritize fibre optic cables in this country, the quality of service, whether through your mobile phone or home internet, will skyrocket. That’s the commitment I’m making.” Tijani outlined a plan to accelerate the project within the next 6 to 12 months, aiming to secure funding from private companies rather than relying on government funds.
He detailed the financial scope, indicating that an estimated $1.5 to $2 billion is required to wire the nation, reaching the targeted 95,000 kilometres. Tijani hopes to collaborate with reputable companies over the next two to three years, with the ambition of covering a significant portion of the required distance before the end of the administration’s first four years.
In addition to the fibre optic expansion, the Minister highlighted the government’s focus on enhancing the infrastructure for 5G networks across the country. Tijani acknowledged the existing infrastructure in some locations but recognized the need for further development to support a high-quality 5G network nationwide. He clarified that while Nigeria has 5G licenses and operational infrastructure in some areas, ensuring uniform support remains a challenge, impacting the network quality in certain locations.
As the Minister shared updates on his ministry’s achievements within the first 100 days in office, the ambitious plans for fibre optic expansion and 5G infrastructure development underscore the government’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s digital connectivity.
