Ex-EFCC chairman Ibrahim Lamorde is dead

Ibrahim Lamorde, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been reported deceased. According to the Premium Times, Lamorde died in Egypt at the age of 61. The former EFCC chairman was alleged to be seeking medical treatment in Egypt. Between 2012 to 2015, Lamorde served as the EFCC chairman.

On November 23, 2011, he was appointed acting chairman of the anti-graft agency after President Goodluck Jonathan removed Farida Waziri. On February 15, 2012, the Senate confirmed Lamorde as the Commission’s third substantive Chairman.

He was born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa state, and graduated from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology in 1984. He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1986 and retired as Deputy Inspector-General. When the EFCC was established in 2003, Lamorde was appointed the organization’s first head of operations. He became acting chairman in January 2008 and kept the role until Waziri was selected and ratified by the Senate in June 2008.

Lamorde returned to the EFCC in 2010 as director of operations, succeeding Stephen Otitoju. On November 23, 2011, Lamorde, who was then an assistant commissioner of police (ACP), was reappointed acting chairman. He was appointed substantive chairman of the agency on February 15, 2012, and served until November 9, 2015, when former President Muhammadu Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu.
