Elon Musk’s internet company, Starlink, is establishing ground stations across Nigeria in a strategic effort to enhance internet connectivity in the country. According to a source familiar with the project, these facilities will be built on approximately 29,000 acres of land acquired in Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers.
Key Locations for Ground Stations
Starlink plans to set up ground stations in the following locations:
- Okun Ajah, Lagos State
- Sagamu, Ogun State
- Port Harcourt, Rivers State
The construction of these ground stations has already begun in Okun Ajah, Lagos, and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2024. The other locations in Ogun and Rivers states will be ready by 2025.
Partnership with Equinix
Starlink is partnering with Equinix, a leader in data center solutions, to build these ground stations. In 2022, Equinix made a significant entry into the Nigerian market by acquiring MainOne, a leading West African data center and connectivity solutions provider, in a $320 million deal.
Importance of Ground Stations
Ground stations, called gateways, are critical terrestrial relay stations communicating with Starlink’s satellites orbiting the Earth. These stations are essential for transmitting data between the satellites and the internet backbone on the ground. They receive data from the satellites and route it to appropriate internet networks, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of internet services.
According to SpaceX, Starlink’s parent company, around 150 ground stations link Starlink satellites with internet data centers on the ground. These data centers connect to existing fiber-optic infrastructures, sending data to the Starlink satellites in Low Earth Orbit.

Establishing Starlink’s ground stations in Nigeria signifies a major advancement in the country’s internet infrastructure. Starlink’s Growing Presence in Nigeria
Starlink entered the Nigerian market in 2022 after acquiring an Internet Service Provider (ISP) license from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). In addition to the ISP license, Starlink also secured a Sales and Installation license and an International Gateway license, which allows the company to establish and operate facilities for transmitting international voice, data, and other telecommunication services into and out of Nigeria.
As of the first quarter of 2024, Starlink had become the third-largest ISP in Nigeria, trailing only Spectranet and FibreOne. Despite its higher costs than local ISPs, Starlink has quickly gained popularity among Nigerians, particularly in areas with poor internet connectivity. Its growing customer base underscores its significant impact on the Nigerian telecom sector.
The ground stations project will further solidify Starlink’s position as one of the biggest players in the Nigerian telecom industry. It offers a promising solution to the country’s connectivity challenges.
