In an interview with the CreativiTEA podcast, Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Basketmouth, whose stage name is Bright Okpocha, warned aspiring artists about the perils of social media popularity. “A lot of people have been blinded by the idea of just being famous,” Basketmouth stated, highlighting the fact that many people just think about the spotlight and not how they got there.
They are indifferent to undermining the path to fame. What is the equity of your brand? Insisting that listeners consider the long term, the comic emphasised the transient nature of viral fame. Will you be able to maintain what you have produced in two weeks for twenty years? What are you trying to sell? What can you provide? Which brand are you interested in representing?
Basketmouth cautioned against imitating the wrong people in response to the growing popularity of negative publicity as a quick route to stardom. “It’s negative publicity, period. The fact that it works for someone else blinds people. “Never let what you see on social media fool you,” he emphasised.
“The majority of our folks are false. They’re attempting to make you appear unauthentic. For a few weeks, people will speak about you, and that’s about it. “You will give birth to children later, so don’t sell your brand for two weeks of fame,” the filmmaker added, delivering a potent message for aspiring creatives. He underlined the benefits of genuineness and enduring worth over fleeting attention.
Basketmouth talked about overcoming personal obstacles and maintaining his sense of reality while reflecting on his own experience. There were moments when I let the frustrations and the physical side of things overwhelm me. Joy in your heart is what matters most. You must be joyful on the inside; you can be joyful even if you are in debt.
“Sometimes you just have to pray to God specifically for joy,” Basketmouth added, sharing a particular method for maintaining optimism. Say, “God, I want to be happy every single day.” It appears when you exude that positive vibe.
The comedian concluded by saying, “We humans are like gods,” which serves as an encouraging reminder of our potential. For this reason, you can have confidence and pray to a being that you cannot see.
Your superpower lies in your faith. You have that power from God; call on me at any time. Start creating as soon as you awaken in the morning and begin to experience that happiness and tranquilly. Begin considering your options.
