Dino Melaye: Why Two LG Results Was Cancelled In Ekiti State

by Tolulope Akinruli

Due to excessive voting and evading the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the election results of two units in Ekiti invalid on Sunday evening.

Shortly after Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress was announced the victor of the presidential election held on Saturday in Ekiti, Prof. Akeem Lasisi, the INEC State Collation Officer for the Presidential Election held a meeting.

Atiku Abubakar, a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party, received 89,554 votes, while Tinubu received 201,494 votes.

With 11,397 votes, Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party tied for third place.

The Collation Officer reported that there were 315,058 accredited voters in total on election day, 308,171 valid votes, 6,301 rejected votes, and 314,472 total votes cast.

The SCOPE Ekiti named two units in response to Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s question about locations where elections were postponed or canceled due to various irregularities.

Also, there were two locations where cancellations were observed. The voting unit received 1,786 votes in total. Ado Ekiti Polling Unit 7, Ward 4, and Ekiti East Local Government Ward 7, Polling Unit 6 were the locations. Overvoting and BVAS bypassing were the causes of the cancellation.

In a letter to the commission chairman, Lasisi, who is also the vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Ila Orangun, Osun State, acknowledged that the report had been recorded on EC40G.

An EC40G is a list of voters who have registered to vote and a situation report of events that occur in a unit or ward.

Yakubu inquired as to whether any of the party agents or observers were interested in contesting the outcome shortly after the collation officer made this known.

Dino Melaye, the PDP National Collation Agent, pointed up at the vice chancellor and asked him to clarify what he meant by the vague term “BVAS bypass.”

“All I want is to learn. I heard that the BVAS bypass was what caused the cancellation. Simply put, I just want to know what it means,” he said.

Lasisi responded, saying, “According to the local government, a specific number of voters were registered. However, they discovered that the number of votes recorded exceeded the number recorded in the BVAS. It was noted as excessive voting because of this.

In conclusion, Dino Melaye nodded and sat down with the rest of his team after being asked if he approved of the collation of the results.
