Prices, various wholesalers and retailers within the alcoholic beverage industry are voicing their distress over the dwindling patronage of their products in the face of skyrocketing costs, a consequence of recent price hikes implemented by bottling companies across the nation. In a candid interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) conducted in Lagos, these stakeholders revealed that prices have surged by a staggering 100% compared to the same period in 2023.
The notifications of impending price revisions issued by bottling companies have exacerbated the situation, exacerbating the financial strain felt by both businesses and consumers alike. Notably, a 50-cl PET bottle of various soft drink brands, which was previously priced at N150 in 2023, is now fetching N300, reflecting a significant escalation.
Similarly, the prices of alcoholic beverages, including canned beer and malt drinks, have witnessed substantial increments, with the former now commanding N700 per can compared to its previous price of N400, and the latter seeing a surge from N250 to N400 per can. Furthermore, the intoxicant market has experienced a nearly 100% price surge, with prices soaring from N350 to N600 within the period under review.
Mrs. Mercy Igalawuye, a proprietor of a local supermarket, lamented the noticeable downturn in sales, reporting a significant 30% reduction in product turnover within her establishment. She emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive economic reform and urged government intervention to address the pervasive inflationary pressures plaguing the nation.
“It’s becoming increasingly difficult for people to afford even the most basic necessities, let alone indulging in luxury items like soft drinks,” Mrs. Igalawuye remarked. “The government must take decisive action to mitigate the impact of these price increases before the situation escalates further and becomes untenable for the masses.”

Mr. Seun Asaolu, a vendor operating within the sector, echoed similar sentiments, expressing how the exorbitant prices have significantly hampered daily sales and dampened overall business prospects. The palpable frustration among stakeholders underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts from both public and private sectors to address the economic challenges facing the nation and alleviate the burden on businesses and consumers alike.
