The ongoing crisis in Rivers State has intensified as EntrepreneurNG reports the resignation of four commissioners from Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s cabinet. The latest resignations include the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Inime Chinwenwo-Aguma, and the Commissioner for Works, George-Kelly Alabo, joining the ranks of those who stepped down within 24 hours.
Chinwenwo-Aguma cited “personal” and “other pressing commitments” as reasons for her resignation, while Alabo anchored his decision on his “conscience,” as stated in press releases obtained by PUNCH Online.
This development follows the resignations of the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, SAN, and the Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke, from Fubara’s cabinet.
In a twist to the crisis, 27 lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesome Wike defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. In response, lawmakers aligned with the current governor declared their seats vacant, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections.
Adding to the turmoil, the state government demolished the House of Assembly complex on Wednesday, claiming it was no longer safe for legislative business. The political landscape in Rivers State continues to witness upheaval, raising concerns about the stability and governance of the region.
