Canadian Government Partners with Private Sector to Train Immigrants in Cybersecurity

The Canadian government, in collaboration with private sector partners, has introduced a cybersecurity training program in Calgary aimed at equipping immigrants with in-demand skills.

The initiative includes work-integrated learning and guarantees job placement in one of 16 entry-level cybersecurity roles.

Funded by the Alberta Ministry of Jobs, Economy, and Trade, the program is run in partnership with ReTrain Canada and Manpower Canada.

 

The training will be held from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, over a 12-week period in March.

Participants will earn industry-recognised micro-credentials and gain expertise in cybersecurity fundamentals, applied penetration testing, encryption, and real-world cybersecurity applications—all at no cost.

Course overview

The curriculum includes:
– Cybersecurity fundamentals and operating systems
– Introduction to Kali Linux, Bash, and PowerShell scripting
– Encryption techniques
– Information gathering, vulnerability scanning, and web application security
– Hands-on penetration testing and real-life cybersecurity simulations
– ReTrain Canada cybersecurity designation exams

Additionally, participants will gain networking opportunities and training in programming languages such as Python.

Program structure

– One week of employment preparation with Manpower
– Twelve weeks of intensive cybersecurity training at ReTrain Canada
– Four weeks of potential work experience through projects or company placements
– Job placement assistance upon program completion

Available entry-level cybersecurity roles

Graduates will be placed in positions such as:
– IT technician
– Network tester
– Junior auditor
– Cybersecurity technician
– Information security analyst
– IT support specialist
– Cyber forensic analyst
– Digital forensic analyst
– Security auditor
– Junior security analyst
– Source code auditor
– Junior penetration tester
– Crypto analyst
– Cyber incident responder
– Information security crime investigator
