Microsoft founder Bill Gates has revealed his collaboration with the Federal Government to develop a ‘one-identity’ technological platform to integrate diverse data sets.
During a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Gates highlighted the significance of the identity platform in enhancing planning, security, and tax efficiency.
The ID technology, known as MOSIP, seeks to ensure digital benefits for every Nigerian citizen. Gates expressed his readiness to offer further support to Nigeria beyond providing this technological assistance.
Digitization Support:
Gates emphasized the importance of harmonizing Nigeria’s scattered data through digitization efforts. He mentioned collaboration with Mr. Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, to implement MOSIP for the identification platform. This initiative aims to facilitate digital benefits for citizens, improve payment efficiency, increase financial inclusion, and streamline tax collection processes.
Nigeria’s Technological Capacity:
Gates commended Nigeria’s potential to manage such systems, citing the nation’s abundance of talented youths.
President Tinubu’s Remarks:
President Bola Tinubu highlighted his administration’s focus on technology investments to ensure transparency, accountability, and public-sector performance. He emphasized technology’s role in combating corruption and financial irregularities in public service.
Tinubu recalled his experience as governor of Lagos State, where he utilized technology to enhance revenue generation and create an efficient tax system. He stressed the necessity of investing in technology to achieve sustainable development goals and overcome challenges.
