Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria, saw a devastating boat accident near Ocholonya on the River Benue that claimed at least 20 lives.
The victims, who were mostly women and children, were returning to their settlements in Doma, Nasarawa State when their wooden boat capsized. They had been at a market in Ocholonya.
The incident was confirmed by the Benue State Police Command, stating that 20 bodies had been retrieved and 11 people had been rescued and transported to the hospital. Local divers are helping search for missing people as part of the ongoing rescue efforts.
The accident’s cause has not yet been identified. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the boat, which was apparently carrying many people at the time of the tragedy, to sink.
