On the auspicious day of November 29, 2023, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ceremoniously commenced the commencement of the 100-day countdown to the 13th African Games, scheduled to take place in Accra in 2024. The journey to this momentous occasion has been marked by Ghana’s successful bid in 2018 to host the African Games this year. However, due to unforeseen circumstances disrupting preparations, the Games have been rescheduled to unfold in March 2024.

The fervor surrounding the imminent event is palpable, considering the significant investments made by the Ghanaian government to bolster the infrastructure necessary for hosting a continental sports extravaganza. Noteworthy among these investments is the development of multi-purpose facilities in Borteyman, the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium, extensive renovations to hostel facilities for accommodation, and the construction of complementary structures in close proximity to the University Stadium. These endeavors collectively signify the nation’s commitment to ensuring a seamless and successful hosting of the Games.

Dr. Bawumia, who took the opportunity to personally inspect the facilities at both Borteyman and the University of Ghana, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made. In his address at the launch, he emphasized the historical significance of hosting the African Games, underscoring Ghana’s readiness after 57 years since the inception of the Games. The Vice President posed a rhetorical question, pondering why Ghana had not hosted the Games until now, attributing it to the belief that there is a time for everything and asserting that this is indeed Ghana’s time to shine on the continental stage.

Beyond the realm of sports competition, Dr. Bawumia articulated a broader vision for the African Games, portraying it as an avenue for unlocking cultural, social, health, and economic benefits. He acknowledged that sports have evolved beyond being merely a game, with the potential to build social capital, stimulate economic development, provide employment opportunities, and promote healthy lifestyles and peaceful coexistence. In essence, the African Games are positioned as a catalyst for multifaceted positive outcomes, aligning with Ghana’s aspirations for comprehensive societal advancement.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia expounded on the African Games as a strategic tool for youth empowerment and overall socio-cultural and economic development. He highlighted the government’s perspective that the development, promotion, and organization of sports, especially events of the magnitude of the African Games, are long-term investments for the nation’s future. The deliberate efforts in constructing modern sports facilities are framed as a proactive measure aimed at enhancing infrastructural capabilities to propel Sport for Development.

Conclusion: Bawumia

Looking ahead, the anticipation for the Games is marked by staggering numbers, with an expected influx of about 5,000 athletes, 3,000 officials, and over 30,000 fans converging on Ghana. The scheduled period from March 8 to March 23, 2024, promises not just a display of athletic prowess but a celebration of unity, cultural exchange, and the potential for lasting positive impacts on the host nation and the continent at large. As the countdown clock ticks away, the excitement builds, and Ghana stands poised to host a landmark edition of the African Games, Bawumia.
