The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has officially commenced applications for its 2025 Internship Programme, offering students and fresh graduates a valuable opportunity to acquire practical experience in areas such as trade, finance, and economic development.

While not a traditional paid internship, the programme includes generous incentives, such as a tax-free monthly stipend of $1,000. Additionally, participants relocating from another country to the host location will receive a $500 housing allowance.

This initiative is part of the bank’s broader efforts to build a skilled talent pool that will lead Africa’s economic transformation. Participants will have the chance to work with experienced professionals and engage in meaningful projects contributing to the continent’s progress.

Eligibility Criteria

Afreximbank’s announcement outlines that the programme is open to:

– Students from member countries,
– Individuals of African heritage in the diaspora,
– And non-African students whose goals align with the Bank’s mission to drive African development.

Applicants must also:

– Be aged between 20 and 32 during the year of application,
– Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at a recognised institution,
– Be studying relevant fields such as economics, law, finance, engineering, statistics, accounting, or social sciences,
– Have fluency in English or French (knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese is a bonus),
– Provide a recommendation from their academic institution for a placement lasting up to six months.

Internship Schedule and Placement

The internship is offered twice a year—starting in January and June—and runs for a maximum of six months. While most placements will occur at the bank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, other locations within the Afreximbank Group may also host interns.

Participants will begin with an induction and later be assigned roles based on their academic focus and career goals. As part of their learning experience, interns will rotate across different value chain departments and receive mentorship from seasoned professionals.

At the conclusion of the internship, each participant must submit a report reflecting on the knowledge gained and how they intend to apply it toward Africa’s development.

How to Apply

Interested candidates are to apply through the bank’s official online internship portal. Submissions are accepted year-round, but for the upcoming cycle, applications must be completed by April 30, 2025.

Required documents include:

– A letter of application,
– A curriculum vitae (CV),
– A copy of a valid passport,
– Certified academic transcripts or certificates,
– A recommendation letter from the applicant’s institution,
– And a one-page “Statement of Intent” explaining what they hope to achieve from the internship.

Once selected, successful applicants will be given two weeks to confirm their acceptance and submit all necessary documents. Failure to do so will result in the withdrawal of the offer.
