Swedish British billionaire Johan Eliasch drew global attention after purchasing roughly 400,000 acres of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil in a bid to protect it from logging and commercial destruction.

The land, located near the Madeira River in the Brazilian Amazon, had previously been used for logging. In 2005, Eliasch acquired the logging company that held rights to the area and shut down its commercial operations, effectively halting further deforestation on the site.

At the time, the move was described as an effort to preserve the forest while governments and international institutions struggled to curb accelerating deforestation.

Covering about 625 square miles, the acquisition was unusual both in scale and intent, as few private individuals had purchased such a vast tract of rainforest primarily for conservation.

Environmental groups welcomed the decision as a bold example of private conservation, arguing that personal wealth could be redirected to protect vulnerable ecosystems where state enforcement was weak. However, the purchase also sparked criticism within Brazil and beyond, with some commentators raising concerns about national sovereignty and describing foreign ownership of Amazon land as a form of “green colonialism.”

Eliasch has maintained that the greater risk lies in inaction amid ongoing forest loss. Beyond the land purchase, he has been involved in international environmental policy, serving as a UK government special representative on deforestation and clean energy.

He also authored the Eliasch Review, which influenced global discussions on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.

In addition, he has supported conservation initiatives through organisations such as Cool Earth, which works with Indigenous and local communities to protect rainforests.

While the forest tract he purchased remains under protection, experts note that safeguarding the Amazon requires sustained enforcement, cooperation with local authorities and comprehensive public policy. Illegal logging, mining and agricultural expansion continue to pressure the wider ecosystem.

Two decades after the acquisition, Eliasch’s decision remains one of the most high profile examples of private conservation, raising broader questions about the role wealthy individuals can and should play in protecting global natural resources.
