About 3:30 am on Sunday, a few All Progressives Congress members broke into the Independent National Electoral Commission’s headquarters and demanded that state governor Godwin Obaseki leave since he had no business being there while the results were still being released.
Under the cover of darkness, the governor is reported to have entered the INEC building on Aduwawa Road in Benin City. He then reportedly went directly upstairs and sat near to the Edo REC’s office, where the results were being collated before to their announcement.
The APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, led the protests and was yelling loudly outside the gate, Edo election.
He and others requested that the governor be removed since they believed he had no business being there. “Obaseki has to come out,” he declared. This is not where he should be. He does not work for INEC.
Nigerian law enforcement must not give in. The demonstrators periodically attempted to enter the INEC building, but even after continuously pounding on the gate, they were sent away. During the scene, Frank Mba, the DIG in charge of the election, entered the building with his team and went straight to Obaseki’s seat.
