While many fruits are widely available and inexpensive, some are so rare and unusual that they command a high price. This article examines the top five most costly fruits, as rated by Jagran, and investigates what makes these fruits unique and why they fetch such high costs.

List of the most expensive fruits in the world:

1. Yubari King Melon

The world’s most costly fruit is the Yubari King melon, grown in Japan. These melons are prized for their exquisite sweetness and juicy texture, and a pair can cost tens of thousands of dollars at auction. The fruit reportedly cost $30,000 in 2008 and continues to be the most expensive fruit in the world to this day.

2. Ruby Roman Grapes

Ruby Roman grapes, grown in Japan, are one of the world’s most costly fruits. These grapes are prized for their big size, perfect roundness, and outstanding flavour, and can fetch hundreds of dollars per lot at auction.Their exorbitant price, estimated at $8,400, stems from tight cultivation standards and restricted availability, making them a premium delicacy.

3. Densuke Watermelon

Densuke watermelon, growing only in Japan’s Hokkaido region, is one of the world’s most costly fruits. A single Densuke watermelon, known for its distinctive black rind and very delicious, crisp flesh, may sell for hundreds of dollars at auction. Its high price is attributed to its scarcity and the painstaking care required for growing. They were sold for $6,100 in 2008, making them members of the ‘luxury food club’.

4. Taiyo Tomago Mangoes

Taiyo no Tamago mangoes from Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture are among the world’s most costly fruits. These mangoes are prized for their exquisite shape, rich sweetness, and brilliant red peel, and can fetch thousands of dollars per pair. They were sold for $3,744 in 2017, demonstrating the stringent cultivation requirements and limited production that ensure their superior quality.

5. Heligan Pineapple

The Heligan pineapple, grown at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, England, is one of the world’s most costly fruits, selling for $1,500. These pineapples, grown using Victorian techniques in unique pineapple pits, are unusual and highly valued.
