Throughout history, war has caused immense suffering and loss to countries, frequently stemming from political strife, religious differences, or land disputes.
War damages people and economy, causing long-term devastation. They’ve taken millions of lives. The concept of a peaceful world can appear unachievable. But could there possibly be countries that have never been at war?
In this post, we will look at various countries that have avoided conflict throughout their history:
San Marino
San Marino, founded in the fourth century, is one of the world’s oldest countries with no history of conflict. This tiny republic, completely bordered by Italy, occupies only 61.2 square kilometres and has a population of less than 40,000 people. Its neutrality was so valued that both Napoleon and the German army avoided it, particularly throughout World War II.
Vatican City
The Vatican City is a small sovereign state within Rome and the seat of the Catholic Church. It has nearly never been at war. During World War II, it was mistakenly bombed twice, resulting in one fatality and one injury, but these were not deliberate acts. The Vatican does not have a formal military, relying on the Swiss Guard for ceremonial purposes, and the Pope has traditionally advocated peace.
Iceland
Iceland has never actively fought a war. Interestingly, Iceland gained independence during World War II, when Nazi Germany conquered Denmark, breaking it off from Danish sovereignty. Allied soldiers safeguarded Iceland during the war, resulting in its independence. Since then, Iceland has remained peaceful and free of war.
Greenland
Greenland, while being traditionally under Danish authority, has never fought a war. There is no evidence of Greenland fighting in battle, even during the Viking age. It does not have a military and instead relies on the coast guard for emergencies. Greenland’s distant location has kept it safe from conflict.
Vanuatu
Vanuatu, a group of around 80 islands in the South Pacific, is noted for its natural beauty and peaceful history. Even during World War II, when conflicts raged in the adjacent Solomon Islands, Vanuatu was not drawn into the conflict. This peaceful nation has remained unaffected by war.
