A woman in London was mauled to death by her two registered extra big bully dogs, the latest tragedy involving the forbidden breed, authorities said on Tuesday. The woman, who was in her fifties, was fatally attacked in Hornchurch, an East London district. Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene, and the two registered dogs were apprehended after being trapped in a room.
Owning an extra large bully breed without an exemption certificate has been a criminal crime in England and Wales since February 1. Anyone who owns one of the canines must have it neutered, microchipped, muzzled, and on a leash in public, among other requirements.
The British government’s decision to outlaw especially large bullies came after a series of attacks by the larger and more powerful American Bully breed. This breed is quite new. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 16 deaths from dog attacks in 2023, a significant increase from previous years when the number was in single figures. As of late 2023, almost 60% of dogs confined in police kennels were bull breeds of some kind.

The attack in Hornchurch comes after a mother and son were arrested a week ago when an eight-year-old kid was injured in a vicious and continuous attack by their extra-large dog. On February 10, the kid was attacked in the communal area of a block of apartments in Merseyside, England. He sustained serious injuries to his scalp, face, and hands.
