Scientists in the United States have achieved a major breakthrough in battery technology with the development of a new polymer that significantly improves the speed and safety of solid state electric vehicle batteries.

The innovation was led by researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and tackles a long standing challenge in battery development which is the slow movement of ions within solid electrolytes. This limitation has hindered the efficiency and wider adoption of solid state batteries for years.

According to the research team, the newly engineered lithium salt based polymer enables extremely fast ion transport, a critical factor in enhancing battery performance. By carefully redesigning the chemical structure of the material, scientists created pathways that allow ions to move more freely compared to conventional systems.

Batteries generate power by allowing ions to travel between two electrodes, the anode and cathode, through an electrolyte during charging and discharging cycles. Traditional batteries rely on liquid or gel electrolytes, while solid state batteries use solid materials that are generally safer but often less efficient.

The new polymer bridges this gap. While ceramic electrolytes offer high conductivity, they are brittle and difficult to manufacture. Polymers, on the other hand, are flexible and easier to process but have historically suffered from poor ion transport. This latest development combines the advantages of both systems.

The breakthrough was made possible by introducing zwitterions, molecules that carry both positive and negative charges, into the polymer structure. These molecules create ion rich pockets that connect to form continuous pathways, allowing ions to move rapidly with minimal resistance.

Researchers discovered that modifying about 80 percent of the polymer with these molecular groups produced the best results, significantly improving conductivity and overall efficiency.

Beyond electric vehicles, the innovation holds promise for other applications including fuel cells and large scale grid energy storage. The research team is also exploring the underlying mechanisms of the polymer using advanced tools such as artificial intelligence and neutron scattering at the Spallation Neutron Source.

A member of the research team, Tomonori Saito, noted that the discovery could support a wide range of technologies that require materials capable of allowing ions to move freely while remaining stable.

The findings, published in the journal Materials Today, represent a significant step toward safer, more efficient, and commercially viable next generation battery systems.
