While Africa is known for many things, one of the continent’s most notable exports is diamonds. The latest data from the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), the global body supervising diamond trade and manufacturing, highlight Africa’s critical position in the global diamond business.
According to the data, African nations dominate the diamond production scene, with eight of the continent’s countries ranking among the top five producers globally. Botswana has cemented its position as Africa’s biggest diamond producer and securing second place globally, just behind Russia.
Botswana’s diamond production continues to have a considerable effect on the international stage, producing 24.5 million carats worth $3.2 billion. Angola is the world’s second-largest diamond producer, producing 9.7 million carats for a total value of $1.5 billion.
Angola’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining techniques demonstrates its adherence to industry best practices. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) takes third place in diamond production. The DRC produced 8.3 million carats of diamonds, worth $64 million, demonstrating its substantial position in the business.
South Africa, known for its historical role in diamond production, is ranked fourth among African countries. South Africa’s contributions, with a production volume of 5.8 million carats and a production value over $793 million, highlight the country’s long-standing competence in diamond mining.
