It is unavoidable. Every firm will confront a major crisis once or twice a year, as well as a slew of minor challenges. This is why a crisis management strategy is essential.
A major executive is poached by a competitor. Your supply expenses are soaring. Your factory is closed for two weeks due to a storm. Your ERP implementation has been pushed back by three months. A data breach has occurred. A legal action. Covid-19 wreaks havoc on your entire supply chain management.
Any or all of these issues could jeopardize your organization’s plan. The problem is to keep our organization on track while it appears that all attention is focused on CRISIS. Crisis management and crisis communication solutions are required.
I’ve seen ALL of the above in my experience working with senior teams from a variety of sectors. The good news is that I’ve seen leadership teams use crisis management approaches to sail through unfamiliar seas and find their way back to their intended goal. The bad news is that I’ve also witnessed other leadership teams fall apart.
1. Establish a Crisis Management Solutions Team
When a crisis strikes your firm, your most successful team members must be allocated to a small team to manage the problem.
Management should delegate specific authority to them. Management should also communicate who is on the team and clarify their objective and role in assessing the challenges.
2. Facts are our best friends.
This team should be focused on acquiring information but also comprehending the emotional impact on the organization. Investigate the truth with compassion and empathy. But, don’t let your emotions divert your attention away from the source of the problem.
3. Clear the table
If the Crisis is significant enough, management must relieve the Solutions Team of other obligations so that they may focus on the fundamental cause.
4. Make a decision right away.
Fear paralyzes teams. Rumors erode trust; according to teamwork-works.com, 86% of corporate chatter is related to hurdles. Your organization’s solutions team must get information that will allow the leadership team to take the next step in fixing the issue.
5. Be poised and upbeat.
Your organization will be influenced by how the leader reacts to the circumstance. It is critical to be brave and positive during these circumstances.
6. Crisis Communication Techniques
Communicate, Communicate, Communicate. Rinse and repeat. Over-communicate with your employees, customers, and/or suppliers. We are far too confident in how well people absorb what has been conveyed.
A lecturer once told me that he repeated crucial points three times because he discovered that only one-third of people listen when you speak.
7. Ownership
Ownership, by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, is one of my favorite recent books. What they make crystal apparent is that every leader must accept full responsibility for what went wrong. Great leaders do not point fingers.
8. Be Present
If the Crisis is severe. Postpone your business trips and golf outings. It is critical for you as a leader to be present when major challenges arise. This is the birthplace of true leadership.
9. Maintain Concentration
Everyone else must remain focused while the Solutions Team identifies the core causes of the situation and recommends solutions. Even if the ship is damaged, it must continue to travel forward.
All other leaders should be identifying what can and cannot be done – and focusing on success measures. In typical circumstances, 70% of employees are distracted (Inc. Distractions are Costing Companies Millions, Wanda Thibodeaux).
10. Assess the Solutions Team
Once the Solutions Team has successfully developed a new path to overcome the obstacles, assess how well the team managed the crisis and implemented your crisis management approach. Make sure you bring in the correct people for each issue and keep anyone off who is unable to follow the standards outlined above.
11. Actual Crisis
Avoid creating an environment in which everything feels like a crisis and everyone wants to be a firefighter. Organizations must be able to recognize when the formation of a Solutions Team is required. In contrast to established teams in your organization conquering everyday obstacles on their own.
12. Revitalize Your Goals
The Solutions team must return to their normal routine following the resolution. Because of this problem, their current goals may fall behind. The solution team personnel’s goal expectations must be appropriately managed.
* Extend objectives as needed.
* Increase resources for “catch-up”
* Clarify everyone’s leadership positions so that teams can get back on track.
In conclusion, use this crisis management method to assist you in managing a crisis when it strikes your company. This is unavoidable for any organization, and we are constantly working on new approaches to achieve your purpose while altering your strategy to overcome the inevitable challenges.
