The efforts of Zacchaeus Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, to lead reforms aimed at revitalising the country’s fiscal policy framework will be recognised and valued by Nigerians, according to Philip Agbese, the deputy spokesman for the House of Representatives.
He claims that four tax bills that are presently being considered by the House of Representatives embody these revisions.
The 36 state governors are demanding that the federal government drop the planned tax measures so that additional consultations may take place, which has caused tensions between the two parties.
Prof. Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has urged his northern counterparts to reject the laws, despite reports that some governors have softened their positions. He has warned that the region’s economy could suffer if the measures are implemented.
Agbese commended Adedeji for his creative approach to tax management, which has greatly increased the nation’s revenue while speaking to reporters in Abuja on Saturday.
He said, “What FIRS has done in the past few years is commendable. Under the stewardship of Mr. Adedeji, the agency has been surpassing its revenue target.
“Do not forget that the FIRS collected a record N12.37 trillion in 2023, which was 10.7 per cent higher than its target of N10.7 trillion.”
Agbese stressed that the public would soon recognise Adedeji’s leadership, particularly when the tax bills were approved and the federal government could use the extra funds to fund vital infrastructure initiatives.
