Nigerian telecommunications providers have suggested raising voice, data, and digital service rates by 100%, citing increased operating expenses brought on by inflation and currency depreciation.
The planned raise has been opposed by the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS), which has called it “insensitive” and an additional burden on consumers who are already struggling financially.
If the pricing rise is put into effect, NATCOMS has stated that it intends to sue the telecom carriers.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has not yet approved or rejected the proposed pricing increase.
Subscribers and consumer advocacy organisations are keeping a close eye on developments and exploring legal options to contest any prospective rate increases, so the situation is still fluid.
