parents as well as The severe economic suffering that the people of Ebonyi State are experiencing is to blame for the low student turnout for the new term, according to school officials there. In contrast to recent seasons, the majority of the schools in the Abakaliki urban city had poor student turnout and low enrolment fee payments.
The current state of the economy is not favourable, since the price of petrol is surging, leading to spiralling expenses for transportation, educational supplies, and staple foods in open markets. Parents, guardians, and other carers are inconsolable at how the harsh economic climate is impacting their children’s return to school, as it will be extremely difficult to fit in the required school runs and other first-term necessities.
In the meantime, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Engr. Jude Okpor, discussed over the phone with Vanguard that the current administration’s implementation of the National Minimum Wage was a part of the Governor’s economic initiative to raise the state’s citizens’ standard of living.
According to Okpor, the Ebonyi State administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru was the first in the Southeast to consent to the establishment of a National Minimum Wage for labourers. He pointed out that the current administration’s empowerment packages fell into multiple categories because both native people and non-native people benefited from the governor’s empowerment programs.
“At the outset of his administration, His Excellency implemented the wage increment of N10,000.00 and later upgraded it to N20,000.00 in order to ameliorate the present economic hardship being faced by citizens, owing to the removal of fuel subsidy, which has continued to impact on the cost of commodities and cost of living, across the country, including Ebonyi State,” he said.
“The new national minimum wage will be paid starting in September, as directed by the relevant authorities. The governor of Ebonyi State is the first Executive Governor in the South East to consent to this.”

Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the State Government has implemented a multifaceted empowerment method called “Vamvavam,” which includes market women, civil servants, and youths, among other segments of society. People have kept testifying about how this empowerment package has helped them, and how opportune it is—coming at a time when parents are getting ready to send their kids back to school—as well as being life-saving.
By adopting prompt salary payments and varying degrees or classifications of empowerment packages for various Ebonyi State citizen categories, the State Government has accomplished a great deal in terms of improving the current economic reality.
Six-child mother Mrs. Jacinta Ifeanyi, who is responsible for getting her children back to school, described how hard it is to deal with the current struggles because not all of her children may return this term. Social commentator Sampson Ekigbo and school headmistress Elizabeth Udeh are demanding that the recently enacted national minimum wage be paid out right away in order to lessen the hardships faced by working-class parents.
They also demanded that the other provisions of the new minimum wage agreement, like the start of the CNG transportation logistics program, be immediately put into effect by the government.
