Former President Goodluck Jonathan has received a formal invitation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to run for president in 2027.
The PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, emphasised Jonathan’s important role in the party’s history and stressed the party’s desire for him to return and serve a second term.
“It would be regrettable if Jonathan chose to run under a different party,” Abdullahi said, adding that it would reveal the “hypocrisy within the All Progressives Congress (APC).” He called on Jonathan to follow through on the work he began in the PDP.
This event occurs as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP prepares to make important choices about the party’s future course. Jonathan’s offer is viewed as a calculated attempt to improve the party’s standing before the 2027 elections.
In reaction to these events, several APC members have voiced doubts about Jonathan’s possible candidature.
They contend that it would be difficult for someone like Jonathan to overthrow current President Bola Tinubu.
