A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has criticized the recent impeachment notice issued to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, by the state House of Assembly.
The faction emphasized that the Supreme Court’s February 28 ruling did not include provisions for the impeachment of the governor and his deputy.
They urged the Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, to adhere to the court’s judgment and pursue peace in its implementation.
The faction also called on Governor Fubara to expedite the execution of the Supreme Court’s decision and to ensure administrative stability at the grassroots level by conducting local government elections.
They highlighted the importance of representing the 2025 appropriation bill, noting that previous attempts were met with resistance from the lawmakers.
This development occurs amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, with the House of Assembly accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.
The Assembly has served them with a notice of alleged misconduct, marking the initiation of impeachment proceedings.
In response to these events, the national leadership of the PDP has condemned the move to remove Governor Fubara and his deputy from office, describing it as a plot against the state’s leadership.
As the situation unfolds, attention is now focused on the state’s Chief Judge, who is mandated by law to establish an investigation panel following the receipt of the notice of allegations. However, reports indicate that the Chief Judge has proceeded on vacation, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing political crisis.
