Onyeka Onwenu’s family has announced that the legendary singer’s bones will be interred before the end of this month. The revelation was made by the family yesterday during a visit from a group of representatives from the Musical Society of Nigeria, or MCSN, who paid them a condolence call at the late singer’s home in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Before her untimely death on Tuesday during her performance at a birthday party, Onwenu was a member of MCSN. Abram and Tjiani, Onwenu’s sons, welcomed the delegates led by Orits Wiliki, Chairman of the MCSN Board of Trustees, and declared their determination to honour their late mother’s wishes by returning her bones to the soil as soon as possible.
They stated that the burial plans would be revealed in the next few days. Meanwhile, King Sunny Ade, overcome with emotion, signed the condolence book, writing: “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.” Recall that the late singer had stressed in a 2021 Premium Times opinion piece that her funeral should be conducted quietly, quickly, and privately.
“Do it quickly, quietly and privately. Mourn, yes, but not excessively. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh,” Onwenu was recorded as saying at the time.
