On October 29, 2024, the Class of 2000 from Obafemi Awolowo University’s (OAU) Department of Management and Accounting presented a spectacular gift to their alma mater in a heartfelt demonstration of educational support. The alumni group gave 50 new computer systems and completely renovated the departmental library, including new chairs and tables, greatly improving the university’s digital and academic resources.

The handover event, conducted in the department’s ICT room, was attended by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.S. Banire, who officially inaugurated the upgraded facilities. In his speech, Prof. Banire praised the alumni’s generosity and emphasised that the renovations would benefit the entire university. “This is a gift to the whole school,” he said. “It’s a resource that will broaden learning opportunities and enhance digital access for students and faculty alike.”

Among other graduates, Mr. David Fagbowore, Class Financial Secretary, and Mr. Akintunde Akinmade, Class PRO, represented the Class of 2000. Class President Mr. Oluyemi Abaolu-Johnson, who was unable to attend, expressed his thanks and congratulations, saying he was proud to be returning the favour to the university that helped launch their careers.

The donation was hailed as a “one-of-a-kind gift” by faculty dean Prof. F.O. Fagbohun, who also encouraged other alumni organisations to think about making comparable contributions to help the university with its infrastructure needs. Prof. G.O. Akinola, the department head, expressed this feeling and thanked the Class of 2000 profusely.

She remarked, “Today is a proud day for the department,” emphasising how the improved facilities will significantly improve students’ capacity for digital learning and research. Students will have access to necessary digital resources through the new ICT lab and e-library, creating a more favourable learning environment that meets contemporary academic requirements.

It is anticipated that the Class of 2000’s kind donation would encourage other alumni to make comparable efforts, setting a high bar and creating a lasting legacy for OAU’s future students.
