The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has initiated oil recovery operations following a spill from Shell’s 16-inch Nun River-Kolo Creek pipeline at Obololi community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
The incident resulted in an undetermined volume of crude oil discharging into the River Nun, affecting adjacent areas.
Upon receiving the spill report, NOSDRA conducted a Joint Investigative Visit (JIV) to assess the situation. Due to the pipeline’s submersion, the exact cause of the leak remains undetermined.
Containment measures have been implemented, and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is constructing a coffer dam to access the leak point.
Temporary storage tanks are being transported to the site, with oil recovery operations commencing on Friday, February 21, 2025.
NOSDRA is closely monitoring the response efforts to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to mitigate the spill’s environmental impact.
