A recent viral video comparing the fuel efficiency of products from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Dangote Refinery has triggered a public controversy.
In the video, a content creator asserts that a generator running on fuel from an NNPCL station lasts 17 minutes, and one running on fuel from the Dangote Refinery lasts 33 minutes. This resulted in claims that NNPCL was selling inferior fuel.
These accusations were denied by NNPCL, which said the assertions were “baseless and entirely unfounded,” stemming from “unverified and amateur research.”
The business stressed that the Dangote Refinery, which complies with stringent industry standards, provides a sizable amount of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at its stations in Lagos.
NNPCL issued a warning against wilful disinformation and threatened legal action against individuals who disseminate inaccurate information regarding its activities.
In an anonymous statement, Dangote Refinery officials disputed that the contentious fuel came from their plant. They questioned why NNPCL brought the refinery into the dispute, arguing that since NNPCL runs its own refineries and purchases petroleum from other sources, not all of the fuel it sells originates from the Dangote Refinery.
