The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has halted its planned nationwide demonstration against the recent 50% rise in telecommunications charges.
This decision came after a meeting with representatives of the federal government on Monday, which George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, chaired.
During the talks, both sides decided to form a 10-member committee to examine the tariff increase, with five members from the government and the NLC.
Within two weeks, the committee is supposed to report its findings after studying the full tariff structure.
Concerned about the added financial strain on Nigerians, the NLC first declared the protest in reaction to the pricing hike that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had approved.
However, the NLC chose to halt the protest when the review committee was established to facilitate additional discussion and a thorough assessment of the tariff structure.
