The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide mass protest slated for February 27th and 28th in response to the prevailing hardships across the country.
During an emergency session held at Labour House in Abuja last Friday, Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, revealed this decision.
Ajaero clarified that the protest came after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the federal government concerning the widespread hardships faced by Nigerians.
The request was issued to underscore the urgent need for reforms aimed at mitigating the ongoing challenges endured by citizens.
NLC’s Demands and Concerns
The unions have criticized the Federal Government for failing to implement agreements reached in October, expressing disappointment at the neglect of citizen welfare and the welfare of Nigerian workers.
Ajaero emphasized the necessity of these protest actions, stating, “It is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures…”
He reiterated the situation’s urgency, demanding the Federal Government fulfil its obligations within 14 days, as highlighted in a previous media briefing.
Key Points to Consider
The decision to stage the protest follows President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to eliminate the costly fuel subsidy last May, coupled with his administration’s lifting of currency trading restrictions, resulting in a significant surge in petrol prices.
On February 8th, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a two-week ultimatum to the government, urging action on various demands, including wage increments and improved access to public utilities.

Furthermore, widespread insecurity has adversely affected agricultural output, leading to a spike in food prices, further exacerbating the situation.
