Nigeria has enough water resources, according to the Federal Government, to produce 14,000 megawatts of power.
This was said during the signing of a memorandum of understanding for sustainable development between Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, and Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power.
The World Bank Sustainable Power and Irrigation Project for Nigeria program was to be implemented through the Memorandum of Understanding.
Bolaji Tunji, the minister of power’s media aide, said in a statement that the signing ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday represented a cooperative attempt to utilise Nigeria’s vast hydropower potential.
According to reports, the ministers signed the Memorandum of Understanding in front of important stakeholders, including World Bank development partners and senior government officials.
In his remarks, Adelabu emphasised the importance of the SPIN program in boosting energy security, expanding Nigeria’s energy mix, and halting climate change.
According to him, hydropower currently accounts for 20% of Nigeria’s 5,000MW grid supply, with an estimated 14,000MW of potential.
However, he claimed that just 15% of the 14,000 MW of potential had been used.
