In a concerning revelation, Dr. Rahman Olayinka, President of the Association of Residents Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, disclosed that the association witnesses a weekly exodus of five to ten members migrating to foreign countries. This alarming trend, he emphasized, stems from the pursuit of enhanced welfare packages and a more conducive working environment.
Expressing his deep concern at a press briefing on Monday, December 4th, 2023, Dr. Olayinka advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s health system to address the critical issue of brain drain.
Unveiling the Root Causes
Dr. Olayinka elucidated the primary reasons driving this migration, stating, “Health workers seek improved welfare packages, optimal working conditions, and a robust healthcare system, coupled with comprehensive insurance coverage for their families.” Urgently addressing this matter, he urged a complete restructuring of the country’s healthcare system to curb the increasing departure of healthcare professionals seeking opportunities abroad.
Despite a recent upward revision in salaries and wages by the FCTA, Dr. Olayinka underscored that the new scale is yet to be implemented. This highlights the pressing need for immediate action to redress the grievances of healthcare professionals.
ARH Health Week: A Call for Change
Dr. Olayinka announced the upcoming ARD Health Week, themed “The State of Nigeria’s Health Care System: An Update.” This event, he believes, offers a unique platform for discussions that can contribute to the improvement of the nation’s health sector.
Stressing the urgency, he called for the alignment of Nigeria’s healthcare system with World Health Organisation guidelines. Several key topics will be addressed during the health week, including the unresolved crisis in the health system, the roles of government and society in healthcare improvement, and the crucial issue of medical victimization and bullying of medical doctors. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and bring about positive changes in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
