Nigeria has achieved its first successful meeting of the 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) crude oil production quota set by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in November 2023.

The nation produced 1,538,697 barrels of crude oil per day on average in January 2025, just above the OPEC quota.

Nigeria had previously struggled to meet its OPEC output objectives for 2022, 2023, and 2024; this accomplishment represents a major improvement.

Improved security measures against pipeline vandalism and oil theft, along with initiatives to revitalise oil infrastructure, are credited with the increase in production.

Notwithstanding these advancements, Nigeria’s present output is still less than the 2.06 million barrels per day budgeted by the federal government.

Through ongoing expenditures and policy changes meant to draw in foreign capital and boost operational effectiveness, the government has stated its plans to raise production even more, reaching 3 million barrels per day by 2025.
