The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has asked for a comprehensive investigation into the murder of Ms. LadiAnzaki Olubunmi, a Nigerian TikTok content moderator who worked for Teleperformance, the social media company’s Kenyan contracting partner.
In a press statement issued by Gabriel Odu, Media and Public Relations Unit, NiDCOM, on Thursday, the Commission’s Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, highlighted the need for a Labour Mobility Law in Nigeria.
She claimed that such law will establish an organised framework to protect Nigerians’ rights and well-being while working overseas by providing proper documentation, monitoring, and support mechanisms. Dabiri-Erewa stated that the new law will assist prevent issues with workplace conditions, mental health support, and Nigerian workers’ ability to return home when necessary.
She also expressed condolences to Ms. Olubunmi’s family, friends, and colleagues. The NiDCOM Chairman requested Kenyan authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances behind Olubunmi’s tragic death.
She stated that the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya has been notified to monitor the situation and offer assistance to the deceased’s relatives. She also urged Nigerians in Kenya to stay calm while the investigation continues and assured them that the Federal Government, through NiDCOM, remains committed to protecting and aiding Nigerians overseas.
Dabiri-Erewa also recommended Nigerians seeking jobs in foreign countries to work solely with respectable organisations and to be well-informed about their rights and accessible support systems. Ms. Olubunmi, who had worked for the company since 2022, was discovered dead and rotting in her Nairobi flat last week after being absent from work for three days.
