Google recently announced the Nest Wifi Pro, a new mesh networking system. This is Google’s most advanced mesh networking system to date, as the name suggests.
The big news here is Wi-Fi 6E support, which supports the new and less crowded 6GHz band. This could help with traffic congestion – a big deal if you live in a crowded apartment building – and data transfer rates.
One thing to keep in mind is that you’ll need a compatible Wi-Fi 6E client device to use this new spectrum.
The Nest Wifi Pro is a tri-band system with a 5400Mbps combined data transfer rate. The 2.4GHz band can support up to 574Mbps, while the 5GHz and 6GHz bands can both support up to 2,404Mbps.
Unfortunately, despite being marketed as a “Pro” device, the wired connectivity options are limited. There is one Gigabit WAN port and one Gigabit LAN port. That’s all. There is no USB-C port, and there are no Multi-Gig ports of any kind.
The lack of additional ports is disappointing, but this isn’t a large device. Its widest point is only 13cm. And, given that it comes in trendy pastel colours, one suspects that design was a top priority for Google. What good is a router if your wife hides it in the shoe cabinet?
Availability and pricing
The Google Nest Wifi Pro is available in the US now. A single router is US$199.99 (~S$285) while a two-pack and three-pack are US$299.99 (~S$428) and US$399.99 (~S$570) respectively.
