A system glitch in MTN Nigeria’s network led to the disappearance of debt on the accounts of subscribers who had borrowed credit from the telecom company. Subscribers, initially believing that MTN had deliberately cancelled their debts, jubilated and thanked the company for the unexpected relief.
An MTN official confirmed to Nairametrics that the disappearance of debts was due to a glitch, clarifying that subscribers would still be required to pay the cleared debts once MTN rectifies the issue. In an official statement issued in response to the situation, MTN apologized for the inconvenience, assuring customers that the balances would reflect accurate figures once the problem is resolved.
Upon discovering the debt disappearance, subscribers expressed excitement and gratitude on social media platforms. Some even suggested that loan app companies should follow MTN’s example. However, MTN emphasized that the debts were not cancelled and the glitch would be addressed.
It’s common for mobile network operators in Nigeria, including MTN, Globacom, Airtel, and 9mobile, to allow customers to borrow airtime and repay later, anticipating repeat calls and ensuring the borrowed airtime is repaid.
