MTN Group and Airtel Africa have entered into agreements to share network infrastructure in Uganda and Nigeria, aiming to reduce operational costs and expand service coverage, particularly in underserved rural areas.

This collaboration is part of a broader global trend among telecom operators to share resources, thereby enhancing service quality while managing expenses more effectively. By avoiding redundant infrastructure investments, both companies anticipate improved operational efficiency and accelerated network expansion.

Following the implementation of these agreements in Uganda and Nigeria, MTN and Airtel plan to explore similar partnerships in other African markets, including Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia. Potential areas of cooperation involve radio access network sharing and joint utilization of fiber infrastructure.

It’s important to note that while MTN and Airtel are collaborating on infrastructure, both companies will continue to operate as independent entities and compete in the marketplace. Additionally, this partnership does not preclude either company from engaging in similar agreements with other operators in various markets.
