Tech giant Microsoft has unveiled a $1 million (approximately N1.6 billion) investment aimed at equipping one million Nigerians with artificial intelligence (AI) skills over the next three years.
The announcement was made during the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos, Nigeria, by Ola Williams, Country Manager of Microsoft Nigeria & Ghana, alongside Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, as reported by Techeconomy.
Williams emphasized that the initiative aligns with Microsoft’s broader mission to empower individuals and organizations worldwide.
“This announcement is one of the ways that we bring this mission to life. I’m thrilled. I am so delighted to announce that, as Microsoft in Nigeria, we will be investing one million dollars in the next two years to empower one million Nigerians,” Williams stated.
She highlighted that the investment is designed to provide essential AI skills, enabling Nigerians to not only use AI but also develop AI-powered solutions, create businesses, and establish sustainable livelihoods.
Expressing appreciation, Williams thanked Microsoft for its commitment to Nigeria, stating:
“Thank you, Microsoft, for this great investment. The truth is that Microsoft’s interest in Nigeria is beyond business. We want to impact lives and the economy positively.”
Target Beneficiaries and Microsoft’s Commitment to Africa
The AI Skill Development Programme will cater to startups, businesses, and government officials, ensuring they gain the expertise needed for AI-driven industries.
Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, reaffirmed the company’s long-standing presence on the continent, stating that Microsoft has been operating in Africa for over 30 years and is committed to expanding opportunities for partners in the region.
“It is such a great responsibility to come to a market like Nigeria to deliver this message. This is part of Microsoft’s commitment on the continent. As technology evolves, so do the skills. Most jobs now are AI-related, but unfortunately, there aren’t enough people to handle these roles. We believe this initiative is a platform to upskill the people.”
The investment reflects Microsoft’s vision to bridge the AI skills gap and drive digital transformation in Nigeria’s workforce, positioning the country as a leader in the evolving tech landscape.
