People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar stated that while democracy is still the ideal form of government, it hasn’t been able to provide Nigerians with the prosperity and freedom they’ve been promised, particularly in the last nine years. In his Tuesday speech to Nigerians on Democracy Day, Atiku stated this.
He pointed out that celebrating the history of our protracted transition to a stable democracy is the secondary goal of our nation’s yearly June 12 Declaration of Democracy Day (Atiku). In all honesty, there is no alternative to democracy as a system of governance, stated the former vice president.
Even though our current democratic system has been in place for 25 years, it would still be appropriate to honour the sacrifices made by numerous patriots, most notably Alfred Rewane, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua, and Basorun MKO Abiola and his adored wife, Alhaja (Mrs.) Kudirat Abiola.
“The historical timeline of the struggle that birthed this democracy is abundant with a series of coalitions and alliances amongst the political leaderships of that era to flush away the vestiges of military and dictatorial governance in order to return power to the people. It is good that we have had a season of political politics without interruption for 25 years. It is a historical era unlike any other.
“It is cause for celebration, and our wonderful nation’s citizens deserve praise.” I also have to commend the political class and civil society for having accepted the morality of preserving democracy. “It is critical that all parties involved keep contributing in order to maintain the viability of our democracy.
” He went on, “But if our democracy keeps failing to provide the people with the prosperity and liberty that it promises, then it is not yet virile. But during the last nine years, our people have faced an unprecedented degree of violence and instability together with a harsh regime of poverty.
“Unfortunately, the ruling All Progressives Congress ( Atiku) is to blame for bringing about this morning of gloom. “But the opposition political parties are even more to blame than the ruling party for their seeming inability to band together and galvanise a coalition that can replace the incumbent party and define a strategy of good government that will win Nigerians’ support.

“Today, the failure of opposition parties to maintain the functioning of their existence poses the greatest threat to our democracy. “The earlier they realise that the fortunes of Nigeria lies in their forging a coalition, the better it will be for our country and the people.”
