Johnny Gaudreau, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ star, and his brother were slain while riding in New Jersey on Thursday night, according to authorities. Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew, 29, died after being hit by a car in Oldmans Township, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometres) from Trenton.
The 43-year-old driver of the automobile that struck the brothers was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed shock and sadness over Gaudreau’s death, citing his “infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice that earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey.'”
Johnny Gaudreau, who has represented Team USA in world championships, spent his first nine seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Blue Jackets in 2022.
According to local press sources, the Gaudreau brothers returned to their home in New Jersey on Friday to attend one of their sisters’ wedding.
“The Columbus Blue Jackets are stunned and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy.” Johnny was not just an excellent hockey player, but also a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, according to the club’s statement.
“He captivated fans in a way that only Johnny Hockey could. His influence on our organisation and sport was tremendous, but it paled in contrast to the lasting imprint he left on everyone who knew him.
“When Johnny Gaudreau, arrived two years ago, he embraced our community, and Columbus warmly welcomed him. We shall mourn him deeply and will do everything we can to help his family and each other through this tragedy,” the squad said.
His old club, the Calgary Flames, also paid tribute to the player and his brother. “We are heartbroken by this sad loss. Johnny was and will always be a member of the Flames family, as well as a beloved figure in Calgary,” the statement read.
“It was an honour to call Johnny our teammate during nine incredible years in Calgary. He moved to Calgary as a young guy and grew up here, not only as a hockey superstar, but also as a valued member of the community.
“The pain we feel for Johnny’s wife Meredith, children Noa and Johnny, parents Jane and Guy, sisters Kristen and Katie, and the entire Gaudreau family is immense.”
