The British athlete covered 1609 meters in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. As of February 2014, Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco held the record, which is currently 3:43.13.

1937 The Hindenburg zeppelin filled with hydrogen goes up in flames
The image of a massive conflagration devouring the German airship as it attempted to land in Lakehurst, New Jersey, has come to symbolize the end of the zeppelin era. 35 people perished in the collision.
